A dual-polarized horn provides access to two polarization channels through its feed arrangement. It can support polarization measurements, diversity or frequency reuse when the system manages channel separation. It does not automatically double gain or throughput. Specify polarization basis, port isolation and radiation-pattern discrimination separately, then verify them across the operating band.
What does dual polarization add to a horn antenna?
Dual polarization allows the system to transmit or receive two defined polarization components.
The components may be orthogonal linear polarizations or another specified basis, depending on the feed network. Two accessible ports do not by themselves establish circular polarization. Circular operation requires the appropriate field amplitudes and phase relationship.
In a waveguide feed, an orthomode transducer separates or combines orthogonal modes. Confirm which port carries each channel and how the coordinate system is defined.
How do port isolation and cross-polar discrimination differ?
Port isolation measures coupling between feed ports; cross-polar discrimination compares radiated polarization components in a stated direction.
| Quantity | What it describes | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Port isolation | Unwanted coupling between accessible RF ports | S-parameter sweep with other ports correctly terminated |
| Cross-polar discrimination | Co-polar versus cross-polar radiation in a defined basis | Patterns, coordinates and angular coverage |
| Axial ratio | Ellipticity for a specified polarization state | Frequency and angular limits when circular polarization is required |
| Channel gain balance | Difference between channel responses | Separate gain curves with matched definitions |
NIST lists antenna gain and polarization as measurement services, reflecting the need to characterize those properties explicitly.[1]
Why does polarization alignment affect received power?
Polarization mismatch reduces coupling even when both antennas have adequate gain.
For ideal linearly polarized plane waves and receiving antennas, the polarization coupling factor is cos²(θ). At a 45° alignment error it is 0.5, equivalent to approximately 3.01 dB loss. This calculation excludes multipath, depolarization and other system losses.
Using two channels can recover information about differently polarized signals, but the receiver, calibration and processing must support that function. It does not create a fixed gain or throughput increase. Check the antenna feed network for the required channel separation and phase behavior.
What tests should qualify a dual-polarized horn?
Measure both channel responses and their interaction under the intended installation conditions.
Specify input match, port isolation, co- and cross-polar patterns, gain and mechanical orientation. Add axial ratio only when the requested polarization state requires it. Use the same reference planes and frequency points for comparable data. Check performance with the actual feed, adapters and mounting arrangement where those affect the result.

Does dual polarization double the capacity of a link?
Not automatically. Two polarization channels can support reuse when the network provides sufficient isolation, compatible transmit and receive chains and suitable channel conditions. Capacity also depends on bandwidth, modulation, coding and interference. Antenna polarization alone does not establish a throughput increase.
Can strong port isolation guarantee clean radiation polarization?
No. Isolation measures coupling at the RF ports, while radiated cross-polar response depends on the complete antenna and observation direction. Specify both quantities separately. A passing port-isolation sweep cannot replace co- and cross-polar pattern measurements over the required angular region.
What must be specified for circular-polarization operation?
Identify the required handedness convention, viewing direction, frequency range and axial-ratio limits. Confirm that the feed network supplies the required field relationship. Request measured polarization performance for the assembled configuration; two orthogonal ports alone do not prove compliant circular polarization.
